What's A Pandemic Good For?

Don’t think about the end—think about surviving. Making it from meal to meal, break to break, checkpoint to checkpoint, paycheck to paycheck, one day at a time.
— Ryan Holiday, The Obstacle Is the Way

One-third of the global population is on lockdown. People across the world remain confined to their homes and striving to make sense of this new normal. That new normal unfortunately feels a great deal like surviving.

Surviving is great for a short-term crisis. It helps you focus on what you can control and keeps you going from one moment to the next. However, it’s not a great long-term strategy.

Long-term you’ll need something more. You’ll need something that looks like grit. A settled determination to push through no matter how hard things get. A mindset that says quitting is never an option.

It’s not a question of how much work it will take, how much suffering will be involved, or how fast the results will come. It’s about committing to the grind every day.
— Ben Bergeron, Chasing Excellence

Adopt a warrior’s mentality. One that says, ‘Here I stand. Do your worst. For I can do no other’ The sooner you do this, the sooner you take that giant leap forward. Embrace the truth that adversity is one of the best things that can happen to you; that your toughest days are your best days because they force the greatest positive growth–mentally and physically.

This pandemic will pass. It is not permanent. You will get through this. The question is what will happen to you while it’s going on? What will happen inside you? Will you allow it to teach you? Will you use it to make you a better person? One who embraces character, determination, grit, positivity, humility, and heart.

The last thing you want to do is sit around and wallow. You don’t want to play the victim. You want to play the man. The man who holds his head high and steps forward to meet the demands of the day; and wins.
