Television steals much of the time one would otherwise spend reading and learning. This is true of me this past month. Football season is back and pulls me away too often of late. I did, however, read and listen to some outstanding things throughout September. Below I share two I commend wholeheartedly for your edification.
Martin Luther by Eric Metaxas
The story of one Augustinian monk named Martin Luther captivates my mind and imprisons my attention quite unlike any other in history, save that of Christ Himself. That much of the world we know, and love is but the effect to his great cause is remarkable. What else is expected of so consequential a life? He stands before and above all that follows in his wake, not as the tyrannical forces he opposed but rather as a guide and forerunner of things to come. This remarkable life is beautifully captured by the pen of Eric Metaxas. Metaxas leaves no stone unturned and no difficulty avoided. His undertaking of this important work provides a new generation a retelling of the life that most directly shapes the world they inherit.
Writing About Your Life by William Zinsser
William Zinsser is the writer I most like to read. His is a style I connect with and enjoy hearing ring within my ear. Better still, I relish the gifts he left behind for the throngs of writers to come behind. “All writers,” he said, “are embarked on a quest of some kind, and you’re entitled to go on yours.” Zinsser’s direction is one part techniques and ideas, and second part encouragement. His greatest gift is the ultimate gift one artist can give to another: permission. Permission to strike off on the adventure set before you and follow it wherever it might lead. Writing About Your Life beautifully accomplishes both endeavors by providing both tools and the shot in the arm so often sought.
